THE PROJECT

Become the gateway to Sweden, Arlanda (Stockholm) is living a gradual and radical transformation thanks to the "AirportCity Stockholm", an urban development plan, managed by the Swedavia company (owner and operator of ten Swedish airports), the Municipality of Sigtuna and Arlandastad Holding AB, which aims to strengthen the conditions for the growth and transformation of this expanding strategic hub in a modern and accessible airport city.

The aim for the new city is to be sustainable, commercial, social, urban and ecological, which will make AirportCity Stockholm a unique urban development project.

Environment compliant construction materials are used and an ultramodern waste recycling system is implemented. Buildings are located with optimal exposure to daylight, in order to reduce energy consumption and increase the respect for the environment. Everything, from the construction of buildings and infrastructures to waste sorting systems, is carefully designed to significantly reduce the environmental impact.

The plan includes new buildings, renovated premises and neighborhoods that offer a wide variety of commercial, tertiary and accommodation facilities of different types. Thanks to a meticulous and modern urban planning, those who live in the area will have access to a lively city life but also to quiet oases with green spaces and small parks.

The new Comfort Hotel, serving Arlanda airport, will be located near SkyCity, with direct access to shops, restaurants and flights to the world. The new hotel is designed to meet the growing number of passengers to and from Stockholm as well as the demand for accommodation in the city. Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia, said in a statement: "Since 2010, passenger growth has increased by 56%, from 16 to over 24 million passengers a year." Since 2013, Stockholm Arlanda has added 19 new intercontinental air connections.

The Comfort Hotel, designed by Bau Architects, rises next to the terminals and consists of two diagonal volumes of 13 and 10 floors respectively. The double-shell façade is animated by surfaces with different inclinations that capture the changes of light during the day producing reflections of various and iridescent colors. At night, a faint light illuminates the facade giving to the building a "warm effect" even when rooms are not illuminated.

With a 20,000 square meters area and 503 rooms of different sizes, the Comfort Hotel will be the largest airport hotel in the region. The hotel is connected to terminals 4 and 5 via a sheltered walkway and was designed for the needs of the modern traveler as an "economic" hotel, but overturning its classic vision, thus focusing on quality, flexibility and a great attention to sustainability.

Attention was also focused on the smaller rooms, of high quality level, and on a large lounge area for meetings, socializing and relax. The hotel will be located next to SkyCity, which offers a wide range of shops and restaurants.

Hotel's hall is designed as a free socializing place with Bareception, restaurant, "winter garden" and lounge area for meetings. The structure also has a second restaurant, a fitness room and a 24-hour laundry service, an ironing room on each floor, 4 conference rooms with a capacity of 80 people as well as great flexibility in providing different types of accommodation including 10 XXL rooms and one suite. The top floor houses a skybar with a magnificent view of the landing strip for flight enthusiasts.

Works were carried out by Skanska according to the principles of off-site construction, with high standards of efficiency and quality.

StercheleGroup contributed to the project with the engineering and production of 513 composite concrete and lightweight steel and panels bathroom pods, supplied in 3 different models. The building will be certified according to the BREEAM environmental certification scheme.

The Comfort hotel will be managed by Nordic Choice Hotels and will be ready for guest check-in at the beginning of 2020.
